Students Invited to Participate in Michigan Internal Medicine 2009

To:       Medical Students in Michigan’s Medical Schools

From:    Ruth Hoppe, MD, FACP, Governor of Michigan ACP and Nelia Afonso, MD, FACP, Chair of Student Interest Group

RE:       Meeting in Traverse City, September 25-27, 2009

We invite medical students to attend the annual meeting of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP), to be held at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, MI (near Traverse City) from Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, 2009. The ACP is able to provide financial support for students (up to $200 per student) to spend the weekend with practicing internists, educators, and residents in an effort to promote internal medicine as a career option, but more importantly, to learn a little medicine and network socially with your colleagues from the medical schools at Wayne State and U-M and MSU COM, MSU CHM and soon, Beaumont Hospital.  Registration Form. A Draft of student program is available but keep in mind this is only a draft however it will give you an idea of the time commitment and program.

The program for students is integrated with the program overall, providing some sessions aimed at students’ needs and interests and other sessions aimed at showcasing the best of internal medicine such as the very popular diagnostic challenges imbedded into "Thieves Market” and "Professors in Action".

We also invite you to consider submitting an entry for the Student Presentation Session. More Information and Submission Form. Our goals are for you to have an enjoyable weekend with colleagues, to learn some medicine, and to open your eyes to the field of internal medicine.  You certainly don't have to be committed to our specialty to attend and to enjoy this terrific meeting.  We know that many of you are just beginning to figure out what specialty is for you. Attendance at this meeting can certainly help that exploration, into the primary care field of general internal medicine and into the many sub-specialities of internal medicine such as cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, etc.

The ACP provides a maximum of $200.00 in reimbursement for the weekend.  This almost always completely covers hotel/motel expense, especially when students double up in rooms, but at the least, it takes a dent out of expenses. In addition, the ACP covers the meeting registration as well as a continental breakfasts and social receptions.  This is now a fall tradition amongst the medical schools of this state.  It is also a very popular getaway. Each year, we have increasing numbers of students filling up the slots available – last year over 25 students attended.

As a general rule, most course and clerkship directors in the various disciplines know about this meeting, and have usually bent over backwards to free students on clinical rotations to come to the meeting.   We are happy to help provide official information on the meeting if you wish us to.

If you are interested, and to solidify your spot, and of course if you have specific questions, all you have to do is e-mail Marty Muth at muthm@msu.edu or 517 353 9548.   The student registration form and information regarding the meeting can be found on this website.   The deadline for student registration is Friday, September 11, 2009.  We are looking forward to hearing from you!
